There are several options for the RAPT Pill in the RAPT Brew App
Calibration - Connect to the Pill and calibrate it (even if it is in a fermenter!)
Overview - See current telemetry at a glance, such as temperature, gravity, ABV and gravity velocity (slide the information pane up from the bottom of screen to see more detailed telemetry). You can also connect directly to the RAPT Pill by Bluetooth (Smart Mode only).
Automations - Find and run Automations
You can connect to the Pill directly by Bluetooth at any time provided the Pill is either in or in . Smart Mode is enabled by default and is recommended - the convenince and flexibility of Smart Mode outweighs the minor impact on battery life.
By default, the Pill will be in Smart Mode
Smart Mode allows the Pill to be connected to the RAPT Brew App via Bluetooth at any time. This is extremely useful as it means actions such as Calibration, Firmware Updates and selecting Telemetry Type and Interval can be performed even once the Pill has been placed in a fermenter.
Smart Mode will have a small effect on battery life. If you are running a very long fermentation (in excess of two months or longer) you may prefer to turn Smart Mode off.
Once Smart Mode is off, the Pill must be accessed in order to connect to it.
Smart Mode can be toggled on/off in Setup
The RAPT Pill Hydrometer & Thermometer can transmit telemetry by WiFi (default) or by Bluetooth.
The Rapt Pill must be connected to a WiFi Network initially to update firmware and complete registration.
If the RAPT Pill is used as a standalone device then WiFi Telemetry is recommended, to allow for a continual data stream.
If the Pill is used with a RAPT Fermentation Chamber, RAPT Temperature Controller or other RAPT Bluetooth relay device, then Bluetooth telemetry is strongly recommended. Battery life is significantly longer with Bluetooth telemetry.
Telemetry Type and Frequency can be selected and changed in Setup
Broadcast Mode indicates that the Pill is awake and actively broadcasting a Bluetooth beacon that allows you to the RAPT Pill (if not yet registered) or Connect directly to the Pill (if registered to your RAPT Brew account)
Broadcast Mode is indicated by regular green LED flashing. It will remain active for up to 10 minutes.
Broadcast Mode can be activated in several ways.
Smart Mode. If the RAPT Pill is in Smart Mode, it is not necessary to activate Broadcast Mode to connect. The current mode can be checked in the Setup screen of the Device page. In Smart Mode, simply ensure you are within Bluetooth range of the Pill and press COnnect in the RAPT Pill device screen. Connection may take up to 30 seconds.
. Use this to activate Broadcast Mode manually. This works on all Pills as long as the battery is sufficiently charged to power the board.
Charge the RAPT Pill. Plug the RAPT Pill into USB-C or place a Wireless RAPT Pill on the charging base. Broadcast Mode will be activated as soon as charging starts.
The 'Down Under Double Tap' is an always on feature that allows easy and fast direct Bluetooth connection to the Pill. This can be used to connect to the Pill when it is not in Smart Mode, quickly connect instead of waiting up to 30 seconds, or place the Pill in Broadcast mode to register the Pill.
This is a two step process.
Turn the Pill 'Down Under" - so, turn it upside down so the the LEDs are at the top. The green LED will pulse for up to 10 seconds - this is now in Down Under mode.
Double Tap the Pill. Tap the Pill firmly twice - a double tap. This ill turn Broadcast Mode on. This is indicated by steady green flashing
The RAPT Pill will enter Deep Sleep mode when the device is in a horizontal orientation. It will automatically wake up when its orientation is changed or it detects movement. When not in use ensure the RAPT Pill is in a horizontal orientation to preserve battery life.
When in normal operation the Pill will stay in sleep mode but will 'wake' at the set telemetry interval to send telemetry. This will be visually indicated by the green LED illuminating briefly.
Your RAPT Pill will automatically check and install for firmware updates when plugged in to USB power with a USB-C cable (not supplied) or placed on a QI charging dock (wireless Pill only)
Firmware can also be updated through the RAPT Brew App.
To update firmware, Connect to the RAPT Pill in the RAPT Brew App. Open Diagnostics and select Check for Firmware Update. If a firmware update is available the Pill will download and install this automatically (WiFi network connection requited)
To start a Recording for the RAPT Pill, press the Record button in the overview.
You can enter a name for the recording, enter a custom OG (if desired) and select the start date and time within 24 hours either side of the current time.
When the RAPT Pill Hydrometer has been registered to the RAPT Brew App, you can create a custom Pill Hydrometer Automation in the RAPT Brew App.
A Pill Hydrometer Profile allows you to receive alerts from the RAPT Pill based on telemetry data.
Pill Hydrometer Automations are a way to set up Alerts based on the telemetry received from the Pill.
This is extremely useful, especially if you are not using the Pill Hydrometer in conjunction with another RAPT device.
RAPT Pill Hydrometers will measure temperature, gravity and gravity velocity (rate of change of gravity over a specified interval).
You can set up alerts based on any of these.
For example, you can set an alert for when the gravity drops to (for example) 1.025 at which point you may wish to raise the fermentation temperature for a diacetyl rest.
You can set an alert for the gravity velocity to drop to 0, at which point fermentation is likely finished and you can begin a cold crash.
You can set these alerts:
Target Temperature Reached - select the temperature at which an alert will be triggered
Gravity Reached - select the gravity at which an alert will be triggered
Gravity Velocity is greater/less than the specified value - select the operator Less Than or Greater Than and Input a Gravity Velocity (in points per day, where one Point = 0.001 sg) and Alert Message
In order to receive alerts you need enable notifications for the RAPT Brew App on your mobile device.
Once the Automation has been created, it can be sent directly to any Pills registered to your RAPT Brew App. Automations can also be started from the device page in the RAPT Brew App.
Use of the with the RAPT Pill is very useful for increasing ease of use and minimising the need to calibrate the Pill after charging, updating firmware etc.
Once the Complete Wireless Charging Kit or the has been correctly installed (please refer to for an installation guide) then the Pill can be wirelessly charged. You can also purchase the
To charge the Pill simply place it on the wireless charging base, ensuring that the coils are centred over the indicated charging spot on the base. When the Pill is placed on the base the red LED will illuminate to indicate that the Pill is charging. The green LED will start flashing indicating that the Pill is broadcasting a signal so that you can connect to the RAPT Brew App.
The RAPT Pill will periodically check for OTA (Over The Air) firmware updates when charging commences, so this is typically all that is required to ensure that your firmware stays up to date
The RAPT Pill Hydrometer & Thermometer can be cleaned with standard cleaning agents such as and . Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and keep contact time to 30 minutes or less.
Acid based sanitisers such as acid based sanitiser are ideal for sanitising the RAPT Pill Hydrometer & Thermometer. It is best practice to immerse the RAPT Pill Hydrometer & Thermometer in StellarSan diluted to the correct ratio immediately prior to adding the Pill to the fermenter. It is important to not allow an acid based sanitiser to dry on the Pill as the water content will evaporate leaving concentrated acid which can damage the housing.
