# Get Started!

RAPT Pill Hydrometer & Thermometer | Getting Started!

Before using the RAPT Pill Hydrometer & Thermometer for the first time, it needs to be charged, updated and registered to the [**RAPT Brew App**](#registration) (Rapt Brew App version 1.1.4 or later required)

### Assembly & Charging

* **Fully charge the Li-ion battery after installation before first use. The initial charging period is typically around 24 hours.**
* Incorrect battery orientation can damage the circuit board - ensure correct polarity
* Always leak test your RAPT Pill by submerging in water prior to sanitising and dropping in your fermenter
* Only use KegLand approved cleaners such as [StellarOxy](https://www.kegland.com.au/stellaroxy-100-sodium-percarbonate.html) and [StellarClean ](https://www.kegland.com.au/stellarclean-pbw-powerful-brewing-wash-brewery-cleaner-beer-line-cleaner-keg-wash.html)and sanitisers such as [StellarSan ](https://www.kegland.com.au/phosphoric-acid-blend-sanitiser-500ml-starsan.html)or [Phosphoric Acid](https://www.kegland.com.au/pure-phosphoric-acid-85-pure-500ml.html). **Ethanol based sanitisers can degrade the housing**

#### Battery Installation <a href="#battery-installation" id="battery-installation"></a>

The battery is pre-installed in the RAPT Pill with a non-conductive strip on each terminal to prevent the device from being activated during transit.&#x20;

Before plugging the device into power, **you will need to remove the battery and remove the two non-conductive strips from the terminals**. This includes wireless and non-wireless Pills. Reinstall the battery ensuring correct polarity. Polarity (+ & -) is marked inside the battery terminal housing.

1. **Remove Battery**
2. **Remove plastic non-conductive strips**
3. **replace battery, ensuring correct polarity**

Only use KegLand approved 18650 rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries ([KL26734](https://kegland.com.au/products/rapt-pill-replacement-lithium-ion-rechargeable-battery-3200mah-18650-3-60v?_pos=1&_psq=KL26734&_ss=e&_v=1.0))

Important: Once you have installed the Li-ion battery in the correct orientation FULLY charge the battery before first time use by plugging a USB-C Cable into the USB-C Charging port on the circuit board (USB-C cable NOT included) or (wireless only) placing the Pill on a Qi Charging base **for at least 24 hours**.

**The red LED will illuminate during charging. The red LED will go out once charging is complete.**

**NOTE:** All Pills are shipped with protective tabs for the battery terminals. This includes Wireless Charging Pills.

#### **Assembly** <a href="#assembly" id="assembly"></a>

When installing the circuit board into the housing it is important to insert the circuit board in the correct orientation to ensure the correct weight distribution for accurate readings. The yellow end of the circuit board should be inserted into the yellow housing as shown below.

Once the circuit board has been inserted into the yellow housing, screw the two housings together hand-tight until both o-rings are hidden to ensure formation of a hermetic seal.

The housing is typically quite tight, especially when the housing is brand new. A dab of food grade lube on the threads can make the Pill easier to to assemble.

### Registration

Before using the RAPT Pill Hydrometer & Thermometer for the first time, it needs to be fully charged, updated and registered to the **RAPT Brew App** (Rapt Brew App version 1.1.4 or later required).

Once the **RAPT Brew App** has been installed, follow the on screen prompts to create an account (if required).

If you have an existing RAPT account (using the app.rapt.io portal) you will be prompted to migrate your data and existing devices to the **RAPT Brew App**. Follow the prompts to migrate any existing RAPT devices - this only takes a couple of minutes.

To **Register** the RAPT Pill, activate [**Broadcast Mode**](/equipment/rapt-pill-hydrometer-or-user-guide/operation.md#broadcast-mode) (Charge the Pill by USB-C or wirelessly, or use the Down Under Double Tap if charged). The Green LED will flash to indicate the Pill is broadcasting. **NOTE**: Wireless RAPT Pills must have at least 60% charge to enter **Broadcast Mode** when charging wirelessly.

In the RAPT Brew App, navigate to **Add Device** and select **Pill Hydrometer**

Select the **Pill Hydrometer** and select **Connect**

Next, you will need to connect the Pill to your WiFi Network before it is registered.

If there are saved WiFi Networks in your RAPT Network Vault, then this will be sent automatically to the RAPT Pill.

If there are no saved WiFI Networks, select the correct WiFi Network for the dropdown list and enter the password for that network when prompted.

Once the WiFi Network is selected the RAPT Pill will be registered to your account.

Registration to the RAPT Brew App will only take a few seconds. Once you have entered the desired name for your RAPT Pill Hydrometer you will be prompted to go to the Device screen for the RAPT Pill Hydrometer. (**Note**: This name can be changed at any time through the **RAPT Brew App**).

Congratulations! Your RAPT Pill Hydrometer & Thermoemeter is ready to go! Next step - **Calibration**

### Update Through Captive Portal

If the Pill is Broadcasting (indicating by steady flashing Green LED) but the RAPT Pill is *not* showing up in the **RAPT Brew App** under the **Add Devices** screen, it will be running an older firmware which will require a manual update.

### Set Pill to Broadcast Mode

Plug the RAPT Pill into USB-C or place it on a QI Charging base (wireless only). The Green LED will flash to indicate the Pill is broadcasting. **NOTE**: Wireless RAPT Pills must have at least 60% charge to enter Broadcast mode when charging wirelessly.

### Connect to Pill Captive Portal

On your smart phone or tablet, open your **Wi-Fi settings** and connect to the **RAPT Pill XXX** network using the password **kegland1**. The Pill Captive Portal will open automatically

### Connect RAPT Pill to WiFi Network

Select your WiFi network from the list of available networks, and enter the WiFi password for *your* network then select **Join**. This will connect your RAPT Pill Hydrometer to your WiFi network.

### Update Firmware

Once the Pill is successfully connected to your WiFi Network, navigate to the **Diagnostics** screen in the Pill Captive Portal. Select **Check for new firmware**. If a newer firmware is available, this will be downloaded and installed.

### Register RAPT Pill
