RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla | User Guide

The Gen 4 RAPT BrewZilla range are the most advanced yet affordable all in one breweries on the market. Meeting the needs of both brand new brewers and the most seasoned pros alike, these brewing systems allow for complex mash profiles, precise temperature control and incredible ease of use.

35L Gen 4 BrewZilla. The perfect size for single batch brewing. WIth a tiny footprint but ample power, this is our most popular unit.

65L Gen 4 BrewZIlla. The sweet spot of the range! Easily brew either single, double or really strong beers. A compact footprint and easy to manage, but enough power for the most demanding brewing. Requires 15amps.

100L Gen 4 BrewZIlla. The bad boy! This is an absolute beast with 6000w of raw power. Ideal for the enthusiastic homebrewer or the perfect device for pilot batches for small or micro breweries. Requires 3 phase or 32 amps.

    Overview

    All RAPT devices are designed to be used in conjunction with the RAPT Portal. Once connected to WiFi and registered to the RAPT Portal, a world of powerful customisation opens up for the user.

    The RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla can be controlled through the RAPT Portal in two different ways.

    Manual Control can be enabled in the Dashboard of the RAPT Portal.

    Enabling Manual Control gives the user limited, real time control of the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla directly through the RAPT Portal.

    The other way to control the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla is through the use of Brewing Profiles.

    Profiles alllow you to create powerful, complex but easy to setup and use brewing profiels. The use of Profiles allows brew day to be nearly hands off, even with (for example) complex step mashes. Incorporating steps for pre heating strike water, mash out etc are simple to set up and run through the RAPT Portal.

    To Enable Manual Control of the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla it must first be .

    Once registered, select the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla in the Dashboard of the RAPT Portal.

    Select the Manual Control option in the Display Options of the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla.

    This will display the Manual Control screen of the RAPT Portal Dashboard

    From here, various controls can be selected and switched on or off. These changes will be instantly enabled on the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla.

    Target - this is the desired target temperature

    Heating % - this is the desired heating power percentage (NOTE: If Distillation Mode is enabled the closest available percentage power will be automatically selected)

    Pump % - this will cycle the pump on or off at the selected rate

    ENABLE HEATING - This turns the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla's heating elements on or off

    ENABLE PUMP - This turns the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla's built in pump on or off

    ENABLE PID - This enables or disables PID. PID settings can then be set directly in the Manual Control screen

    The current temperature and the Set Point temperature are displayed at the bottom of the Manual Control screen

    Replacement Screen Board/Controller - Toggle Selection

    If you replace either the KL20305 BrewZilla or the KL30106 BrewZilla Gen 4 - LCD Screen Board then it is important to select the correct model of Gen 4 BrewZIlla before installing the Controller or Screen Board.

    This is a manual toggle mswitch on the board that selects the power of the corresponding Gen 4 BrewZilla unit.

    This is easy to do and will only take a moment.

    On the rear of the Screen Controller housing are 4 screws. Remove these to open the housing

    Locate the Power Toggle

    The toggle switch can be accessed directly. The Screen Board does not need to be removed to access this - see images below

    Select the correct Toggle Option

    Refer to the images below. There are three toggle options labelled 35L, 60L, 100L. These correspond to the 35L BrewZilla, the 65L BrewZilla and the 100L BrewZIlla resepectively.

    Move the toggle so that it corresponds to your model of BrewZilla

    Reassemble the Housing

    Once this is correctly selected, reassemble the housing by placing the two halves together and replacig the four screws.

    Test the Screen Controller

    To ensure that this has been selected correctly, once the housing has been reassembled, plug the controller into the BrewZill and plug the BrewZilla into an outlet to turn it on. Once it has booted up, check that the Play/Pause button is off so that the elementsa are not energised. Use the Cycle/Back button to navigate to power settings. If necessary, change the power to 100%. The displayed wattage should now reflect the wattage of the BrewZilla based on boiler size

    BrewZilla 100L Power Consumption

    The BrewZilla 100L has three heating elements that are concealed and integrated into the base of the brewery. These three elements are approximately 2200 watts each meaning the total heating capacity of the brewery is 6600 watts.

    So if you are using 220-240AC power source the brewery can be powered by 1 x 32amp single phase plug that looks like one of these below:

    The plug on the left is the standard type that comes included with the brewery out of the box. This single phase plug is also commonly used for electric ovens or electric hob cooktops that you often see in your kitchen.

    Generally speaking the wiring for this type of plug will be 6mm2 copper cable but we recommend you seek separate advice from your electrician to install suitable cable.

    If your property has three phase power available you may find it favourable to run the brewery on three phases so you are not putting excessive load onto a single phase at your property and split the load over all three phases evenly.

    In order to do this conversion follow the instructions below:

    Unplug the brewery from power, turn the brewery upside down and remove the cover from the electrical enclosure on the underside:

    You will see three terminals on the board labelled L1 (Live 1), L2 (Live 2) and L3 (Live 3).

    These three terminals are connected to the three active sides of the three heating elements.

    Remove the jumper cables that bridge L1, L2 and L3 together.

    NOTE: Neutral 1-3 are already joined on the PCB board so these three terminals are already tied together. As a result all three neutral terminals are interchangeable with each other

    In the images above we used the short pieces of wire as jumpers. For models sold after 2023 we started using a single solid jumper that looks like this:

    Remove the single phase cable and install the new three phase cable making sure to secure the cable through the cable gland as shown below.

    In most instances you will need to use a 2.5mm2 three phase cable but check the cable requirements with your electrician.

    As shown in ‘A’ below connect a ring terminal to the earth and secure this to the body of the BrewZilla.

    For the three active phases and neutral put fork terminals on these cables as shown in ‘B’ below.

    In Australia the cable colours are:

    RED – Active (Live 1)

    WHITE – Active (Live 2) BLUE – Active

    (Live 3) BLACK – Neutral

    NOTE: Please be aware that different countries use different colours for active and neutral so if you check with your local regulations as to which colours are active and neutral.

    Connect the cables as shown below:

    Live 1 to L1

    Live 3 to L3

    Neutral to N3

    Replace the lid for the electrical enclosure. Use a multimeter to check continuity between the body of the BrewZilla and the Earth on the plug. The resistance should be close to 0 Ohms

    Profiles

    Profiles | RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla

    Profiles are a key component of the RAPT system. Profiles are powerful tools that can be customised to a great degree, allowing extremely fine control over all aspects of brewing/fermentation

    Profiles are created in the. There are also Global Profiles that can be imported and customised. Once a profile is created in the RAPT Portal, it can be sent to the corresponding RAPT device using Send Profile To Device from the My Profiles screen. Alternatively, you can select Start Profile Session for the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla in the Dashboard. This will send the Profile to the device and also begin the Profile automatically.

    The RAPT ecosystem is intended to be largely controlled remotely, and thus using Profiles is the best way to (for example) perform complex step mashes or largely automate your brew day with the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla .

    Once you have registered your RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla on the RAPT Portal you can then log telemetry from the device and set up complex brewing profiles involving multiple steps.

    To setup a brewing profile on the RAPT Portal select My Profiles and then Create New Profile. Then add your brewing profile steps such as heat to strike temeprature, mash, mashout etc

    For a detailed guide on creating complex and powerful profiles please refer to Creating and Editing Profiles

    To store a Brewing Profile on the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla you can select Send Profile To Device from the My Profiles screen. The Profile will be uploaded to the device and can then be started manually on the RAPT Fermentation Chamber.

    Alternatively, you can select Start Profile Session for the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla in the Dashboard of the RAPT Portal. This will send the Profile to the device and also begin the Profile automatically.

    Note: You cannot create a Brewing Profile on the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla itself. It must be created in the RAPT Portal first.

    Note: If any changes are made to a Brewing Profile once the Profile has started these will not be uploaded. You must stop the Profile on the device and restart it in order to have changes reflected on the device.

    To stop running or to pause the Brewing Profile on the device press Select to enter the Profile Menu. In the Profile Menu use the Up or Down buttons to navigate to and Select either Pause this profile or End this profile.

    To start a profile that has been uploaded to the RAPT device select PROFILES from the main menu.

    This will display a list of Profiles that have been uploaded to the device. Navigate to the desired Profile using the Up or Down buttons and hit Select

    This gives the option to Start Profile Now, Start Profile Later, View Profile or Delete Profile.

    Note: Delete Profile deletes the Profile from the device only. It does not delete the Profile from the RAPT Portal.

    Selecting Start Profile Now will automatically download any updates or changes that have been made to the selected Profile in the RAPT Portal and then begin running the Profile on the device.

    Selecting Start Profile Later will automatically download any updates or changes that have been made to the selected Profile in the RAPT Portal. You will then be taken to the Delayed Start screen where the desired Start Time for the Profile can be selected. Once entered, the Profile will begin automatically at the selected Start Time.

    Selecting View Profile will show the Profile Steps before the Profile is started.

    Alternatively, you can select Start Profile Session for the RAPT Fermentation Chamber in the Dashboard of the RAPT Portal. This will send the Profile to the device and also begin the Profile automatically.

    When a Profile is running on the device, each step of the Profile can be viewed in the Profiles menu of the device.

    The Profile can be controlled directly. You can Pause or Stop the currently active Profile.

    Using the Up or Down buttons, you can navigate to each step in the currently active Profile.

    Selecting a Profile step will commence that step unless it is already active.

    Selecting a Profile step may also show other opptions depending on the nature of the Profile step. For example, selecting a Profile step with a duration timer will bring up a slider that allows you to choose the point at which to begin the step. These options are dependant on the type of Profile step being selected.

    To stop running or to pause the Brewing Profile on the device press Select to enter the Profile Menu.

    In the Profile Menu use the Up or Down buttons to navigate to and Select either Pause this profile or End this profile.

    Pause this profile will stop the current profile until it is started again in the Profile menu

    Please read this ENTIRE instruction manual before using the BrewZilla unit. If you are unsure about any part of using this brewery, please refer to the YouTube videos that we have made or contact your local distributor

    If the BrewZilla is damaged in any way do not use it. Contact your local distributor

    Ensure the IEC Cable has been firmly inserted into the socket on the BrewZilla base and ensure that the IEC cable doesn’t move once you power up the BrewZilla. If the cable moves or is not firmly connected it can cause an electrical arc to form between the male and female parts of the cable/socket. This arcing can cause heat, damage to the respective parts and possibly result in fire

    NEVER turn on the pump or energise the device without the recirculation arm securely connected. If you do not fit this arm, you could be at risk of spraying hot wort into the air causing injury

    Do not run the pump dry for extended periods. This can damage the pump

    Do not use the lid clamps on the glass lid. This is only for metal distillation lids

    NEVER lift the BrewZilla when it is completely full. We strongly urge you to use a hose to fill your unit. Use the pump or ball valve to transfer your wort. Lifting a heavy/hot BrewZilla may result in serious injury

    If at any stage the recirculation arm is not fitted and/or needs to be removed always ensure the ball valve is turned off. See the recirculation arm assembly section

    Do not boil dry. Do not energise the device or begin a profile from the RAPT Portal if there is less than 10 litres of liquid in the boiler (35L and 65L units) or 20L (100L units). This is the minimum fill level

    NEVER direct a garden hose or mains water down the pump inlet or recirculation pipe as you risk rupturing the silicone hosing on the underside of the brewery.

    Use only the recommended cleaners and sanitiser products listed in the recommended accessories section. Using chemicals not tested or recommended on the BrewZilla can result in permanent damage and void warranty. If you require further assistance with chemical compatibility please contact

    This unit requires cleaning before use to remove any maching oils or factory residue.

    Dissolve 2-3 scoops or at 80°C (176°F) for 15 minutes in around 20L water. Use a mash paddle to stir the liquid and circulate using the pump. Once the unit is at a temperature that is tolerable to touch, use a set of heavy-duty brewing gloves and a microfibre towel to wipe down the internal surfaces. This includes the malt pipe and false bottom pieces.

    This will wash away any left-over machining oils that could still be present.

    The Gen 4 BrewZilla is a complete all in one, all grain home brewing system for those who want to take the first step in all-grain brewing or simply want to upgrade their system allowing them full control of their batch from start to finish using Wi-Fi connectivity.

    The Gen 4 BrewZilla can be used with no Wi-Fi connection using the detachable controller allowing temperature steps to be set and the pump operated manually through the controller. However, to utilise the full range of functions of the Gen 4 BrewZilla we would suggest connecting your controller to your Wi-Fi and registering it on the RAPT Portal.

    This portal allows you to track, record and monitor your brews online and control your brewery remotely through a Wi-Fi connected device.

    The RAPT Portal gives you complete remote control over your brewery and makes the whole brewing process easier with the ability to pre-heat your strike water remotely or set up push notifications for hop or adjunct additions, no more phone timers or hand written notes. Everything can be controlled and logged easily through the RAPT Portal.

    to the RAPT Portal is quick and easy. If you intend to only use the controller manually skip ahead to the assembly instructions.

    The BrewZilla Digital Controller is mounted in a position at the top of the boiler with a tilting frame so you can adjust the angle of the screen depending on your height, improving the overall ergonomics of the system.

    To mount the Digital Controller onto the boiler, slide the controller onto the bracket using the grooves which are moulded into the rear of the controllers housing.

    To adjust the angle of the screen, loosen the two bolts which hold the bracket in place on the boiler. Then adjust the angle of the bracket to your desired angle and tighten the bolts to hold the bracket in this position.

    Tip: if you require a greater angle for the Digital Controller the mounting bracket can be rested on the bolt as shown below to the right.

    The Digital Controller can also be wall mounted at any convenient height with the optional and

    The BrewZilla Gen 4 includes a perforated false bottom. This false bottom is designed to prevent your pump drawing in more than 95% of solids such as hop pellets. It has NOT been designed so you can place grain directly onto this screen and is not designed to hold the weight of a grain bill. The false bottom adds significantly to the reliable operation of the BrewZilla and it’s recommended that this screen is always in place if the pump is going to be used.

    The false bottom has legs that suspend it about 14mm above the base of the dome of the boiler so all liquid that exits into the pump or out via the ball valve will be filtered by this screen.

    To aid in lifting out the false bottom install the eye bolt assembly, washers and locking nut onto the false bottom. These parts are included in your BrewZilla kit.

    The BrewZilla is shipped with the tap assembled but not fitted to the boiler to minimise the risk of damage in transport.

    Unscrew the hex nut and retaining nut from the tap. Push the barb with seal into the tap and ensure the silicone seal is on the tap body prior to installation.

    Then turn the BrewZilla upside down and insert the thread of the tap through the pre-drilled hole in the boiler. Secure the tap on the inside of the boiler using the hex nut and secure the barb in place by tightening the retaining nut onto the taps thread.

    Push the unconnected silicone hose from the pump over the barb on the tap and secure in place with the wire clamp.

    The plumbing on the underside of the BrewZilla Gen 4 can be altered so that the wort runs to the tap before it enters the pump. This is handy as it allows the boiler to be drained through the tap even if you have a blockage in the pump.

    To achieve this, you will first need to move the position of the pump as shown.

    Then change the pipe work as shown below such that the tee piece from the boiler outlet splits to the tap before it reaches the pump inlet.

    NOTE: Pump model and mount postion varies between models

    The malt pipe is the basket which sits inside the boiler and contains your grain during mashing and sparging.

    It is made up of the malt pipe body, a perforated bottom screen and a perforated top screen. The BrewZilla gen 4 does not require any overflow pipework and hence the malt pipe bottom and top screens do not have any holes for pipework.

    Simply insert the perforated bottom screen into your malt pipe body until it is flush with the bottom of the malt pipe. The perforated top screen is added to the malt pipe after all of your grain has been added to your malt pipe during the mashing step.

    NOTE: Use of the perforated top screen is optional. The system can be used without it if you prefer to gently stir the mash but it should be reinstalled for sparging to disperse the sparge water and prevent channelling which can reduce your efficiency.

    It is strongly recommended to use the top screen when reciculating during the mash however, as otherwise it is possible to have grain from the mash 'sucked back' to the pump which can cause blockages.

    We recommend installing the malt pipe handle before you add your grain and malt pipe into your BrewZilla.

    To fit the handle, feed one end of the handle through one hole in the malt pipe. Push the handle in on one side far enough so you have enough clearance on the other side to feed the handle into the opposing hole.

    Once the handle has been fitted you can lift/manoeuvre the malt pipe easily.

    The Gen 4 Malt Pipe now has a stepped lautering capability with added feet mounts* halfway up the malt pipe.

    *Not available in all regions

    The recirculation arm must be fitted whenever the pump is in use

    Do not rotate the recirculation arm while the camlock is engaged

    Recirculation assists in achieving high mash efficiency using your system as it aids in producing a homogenous mixture ensuring the temperature is even throughout the grain bed.

    Before attaching your recirculation arm, please check to see if the silicone washer is in place in the female camlock. If this seal has rattled loose or fallen off, the male and female camlocks will not make a good seal and it will leak when the pump is in use.

    To fit the recirculation arm to the BrewZilla, lift the arms on the female camlock, then insert the male camlock and engage the female camlock into its locked position.

    If you need to rotate the recirculation arm for any reason, please switch off the pump and readjust the camlock to the position required and then reengage the camlock into its locked position before turning the pump back on.

    Important: If you are mashing without the top perforated in place in the malt pipe then always make sure to elevate the silicone hose from the recirculation arm above the grain bed if running a pump duty cycle below 100% and before turning the pump off.

    This prevents grain being sucked back up the recirculation arm and back into the pump when suction is generated when the pump is cycled off.

    Using the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer

    Adding the KL24334 RAPT - Bluetooth Thermometer -20 to 300C - 20cm HTC Probe to the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZIlla system is one of the most cost effective upgrades you can make. In addition, it unlocks fantastically powerful control over every aspect of the brew day.

    Bonding the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer

    Ensure the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer has charged AAA batteries and turn it on by holdig the power button for three seconds until the screen tuyrns on and the current temeprature is displayed.

    To connect the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer to a RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla, first turn on the BrewZilla by plugging it in.

    To use the on board menu, use the Up or Down buttons to navigate. Use the Select button to select or enter a function once highlighted.

    Navigate to the Bluetooth menu

    If you see this message:

    Bluetooth isn't currently enabled. Would you like to enable it? Press Select to enable, Back to return to the main menu

    Select Select to enable Bluetooth.

    Once Bluetooth is enabled, you will see the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer in the list of Unbonded devices.

    Note: Any RAPT Bluetooth devices that are active will also be displayed here.

    The RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer will look like this in the list of Unbonded devices:

    RAPT Temp [Temperature] xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx - Last seen yy seconds ago

    xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx is the MAC address of this RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer. It can be useful to note this down if you have moe than one RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer.

    The number of seconds since telemetry was last received from the device is also displayed. The RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer sends telemetry every 10 seconds for a near real time update.

    Use the Up or Down buttons to highlight the RAPT Temp [Temperature].

    Press the Select button to Bond it the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla. This will bring up the following diaglogue:

    Press Select to bond this device, press Back to cancel

    Press the Select button to Bond the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer to your RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla.

    If you do not wish to Bond the device at this stage or have accidentally selected the wrong device simply press the Cycle/Back button to cancel

    Once the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer has been Bonded to the Gen 4 BrewZilla, it can be used as the Temperature Sensor instead of the built in temperature probe.

    This enables recording in real time the temperature of the mash directly from the mash. The RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer has a long water proof probe that fits through the hole in the top screen of the Gen 4 BrewZilla malt pipe. Thus positioned, you can see the temperature of the mash irrespective of the current temperature of the liquid in the boiler.

    To enable this, use the Up or Down buttons to navigate to Settings. Use the Select button to select the Temperature Sensor option. Here you can use the Up or Down buttons to switch between the Built In probe and any Bluetooth enabled RAPT devices that are also Bonded to the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla.

    Select the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer that you wish to use as the Temperature Sensor. If you have more than one device tyou can identify which is which as the last 6 digits of the MAC address will also be displayed.

    NOTE: When a RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer is being used as the Temperature Sensor, the heating elements can be hotter or cooler than the desired setpoint. This is because the temperature of the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer probe is now being used to measure and control the desired temperature setpoint, rather than the built in probe.

    It is quite normal during a brew day to switch between the Built In probe and the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer depending on the stage of the brew.

    Typically you would use either the built in probe or the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer while heating up the strike water.

    The RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer should be used during the mash and the mashout. It is especially useful if (for example) you are doing a step mash or have missed the mash temperature after adding your grain, as this can be corrected more readily when measuring the temperature from the mash itself.

    The RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer would not normally be used during the boil or when bringing the wort to boiling temperature.

    NOTE: You should always use the top screen to hold the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer in the correct poistion (see below).

    When using the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer as the Temperature Sensor, the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer temperature is used to control thew setpoint of the BrewZilla. The built in probe will continue to read and displayt he temperature of the BrewZilla at the elements, but the elements will cycle on and off dependant on the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer temperature.

    This means it becomes very easy to achieve fast and accurate temperature control at all stages of the brew day. Note: Typically we would not use the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer during the boil as fine control is no longer required.

    To properly control temperature, a combination of recirculation with the pump, power control of the elements and Allowed Sensor Differential should be programmed to achieve a good result.

    Apart from the pump the temperature, power and Sensor Differential can be adjusted 'on the fly' using the BrewZilla Controller, or can be preset into a custom to almost fully automate your brew day.

    An example of a . This can be added to your Profiles Library in the RAPT Portal, and modified to suit.

    This Profile uses the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer to get to strike temperature and maintain two mash steps of 30 minutes each (at 63°C and 70°C). This is followed by a mashout at 75°C for 10 minutes, and then a 60 minute boil.

    When heating to strike temp it is best to have all elements on (power at 100%).

    To maintain temperature during the mash it is best to reduce the power to around 30% (this may be tweaked to suit as ambient temperatures, size of mash etc will all have an impact). When maintaining a temperature, it is best to have a small sensor differential to avoid unwanted temperature swings - around 2°C is best.

    To increase the temperature of the mash, we increase both the power and the Sensor Differential. Setting the power to around 60°c is about the right range - this puts out enough power to heat the recirculated wort quite quickly, but is not strong enough to risk scorching. A larger sensor differential is used here - between 6°C - 10°C works well, using a larger amount for greater mash temperature increases.

    Using a large Sensor Differential (~10°C, for example) means that the element temperature can increase by up to 10°C more than the set point temperature.

    This increases quite dramatically the rate at which the actual mash temperature can be increased (for a mashout or step mash), for example). As we are using the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer to control the temperature, the BrewZilla will automatically shut of the elements to maintain the setpoint.\

    In brief, when using the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer - set a smaller Power and Sensor Differential to maintain temperature.

    Set a larger Power and Sensor Differential to increase temperature.

    Do not use the RAPT Bluetooth Thermometer when boiling. It is optional when heating to strike temperature, although using the pump to even out temperature gradients in the boiler is recommended nonetheless.

    RAPT Device Boot Loop Troubleshooting & Recovery Mode

    How to fix a RAPT device that is boot looping | Recovery Mode Guide

    Symptoms

    If your RAPT device boots up but continually ‘loops’ back to the start up logo, this indicates that the device is stuck in a ‘boot loop’

    This can happen for several reasons including but not limited to a failed firmware download, power interruption during install, poor network strength.

    A Boot Loop can occur on any RAPT device with a screen – including but not limited to RAPT Fermentation Chambers, RAPT Temperature Controllers, Gen 4 RAPT BrewZillas.

    A Boot Loop issue is quite easily rectified.

    Fixing a Boot Loop by resetting NVS (Non Volatile Storage)

    Generally, a Boot Loop can be resolved by resetting NVS.

    An NVS reset is performed using the following steps.

    You may require assistance, as you need to unplug the device and re-plug it while accessing the control panel.

    STEP 1: : Unplug the RAPT device that is boot-looping.

    STEP 2: Hold down the Up or Down buttons on the RAPT device

    STEP 3: While holding the buttons down, plug the RAPT device back in. Keep the two buttons held down while the unit boots up.

    Note: it is quite helpful to have another person assist with this.

    STEP 4: The device will reboot, and also clear NVS. This will reset the unit (so it will forget the current WiFi config and Registration settings unfortunately) but it will also restore it to the last stable firmware condition.

    STEP 5: Once rebooted, you can go through the initial steps required to connect the device to your WiFi network. (See the appropraite Get Started! guide for step by step instructions if required)

    STEP 6: One connected to WiFi, please navigate to Check for OTA Update in the Settings menu and select this. This will download and install the current firmware.

    Please ensure you have a decent, stable WiFi signal before updating, as dropouts during this can cause 'boot loop' issues as experienced.

    STEP 7: This operation may need to be performed a couple of times to be successful. A successful NVS reset will display a Connect this device to the Internet message after booting up. If this does not appear please perform the reset operation again.

    In the unlikely event that an NVS reset does not fix a boot loop issue, we can perform a full reset into recovery mode. This will reset the device back to factory defaults, and restore it to the last verified firmware.

    Recovery mode operates as a bootloader which gives access to settings independant of firmware. This can be useful in some situations such as experiencing issues with your RAPT device due to a corrupt firmware or a problem with a firmware update.

    Typically the avergae user will not need to enter Recovery Mode.

    STEP 1: Enter Recovery Mode

    Unplug the RAPT device, then plug it back in while holding all 4 main buttons down - Up or Down Select Cycle/Back

    Once it boots up, you will see a screen called Recovery Mode Main Menu

    STEP 2: Select option [0] Rollback last OTA update and reset.

    Use the Up or Down buttons to select the required option [0] then select Cycle/Back to do this.

    If successful, the message Rollback to previous firmware worked will be displayed, and the RAPT device will reboot. You may then need to reconnect the RAPT device to your WiFi network and perform an OTA firmware update, then re-register the device to your RAPT account.

    STEP 3: If unsuccessful, the message Rollback is not possible will be displayed, and the unit will stay in Recovery Mode.

    You will need to manually connect the RAPT device to WiFi and update the firmware manually while in Recovery Mode.

    As there is no on screen keyboard, the easiest way to do this is to setup a HotSpot on your phone with a super simple network name and password – such as all capital 'A's for the name and password.

    Thus create a HotSpot network name of AA and a password of AAAAAAAA.

    Use the Up or Down buttons to select option [1] Connect To Wifi.

    Follow the onscreen instructions to enter the SSID and Password on the controller.

    Otherwise use the navigation keys to enter your home WiFi Network SSID and Password manually

    Once connected to the network, the RAPT device will go back to the main Recovery Mode menu. This time, select option [2] Do OTA Update

    This will update the RAPT device firmware. Once this is down, please unplug the RAPT device then plug it back in after 30 seconds. It will now start up properly.

    If you used a custom mobile phone hotspot to connect you will now need to connect the RAPT device to your home WiFi network. Please refer to the online user manual for step by step instructions. The RAPT device will also need to be re-registered to your RAPT account after this.

    In the unlikely event that resetting NVS and entering Recovery Mode does not fix a boot loop issue, please contact KegLand at or your local retailer for warranty support.

    The Gen 4.0 BrewZilla can be controlled using the buttons on the digital controller or through the RAPT Portal.

    If you do not intend to connect your device to the RAPT Portal and hence do not want to utilise the Wi-Fi functionality of the controller you can choose to control the brewery using only the digital controller.

    To remove the prompt requesting you to register your device to the RAPT Portal you will need to disable Wi-Fi in the settings. To do this press Select to enter the menu, then select Settings, then navigate using the arrows to the Disable Wi-Fi setting. Press Select to disable the Wi-Fi and the controller will then restart automatically.

    If you decide you don’t want to register your RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla to the RAPT portal and hence not use the Wi-Fi functionality of the brewery you will in turn lose a lot of the functionality of the brewerywhich is offered through the RAPT Portal. This includes features such as setting up complex mashing/brewing profiles, logging brews etc.

    At the home screen Use the Select button until the Target Temperature is highlighted then press the Up or Down buttons to adjust the target temperature. The BrewZilla will only begin heating once the device has been energised by pressing the Play button.

    Warning: Do not press Play to energise the device if there is no liquid in the vessel.

    Press the Pump button to turn the pump on/off. The Pump text will be coloured light blue when the pump is set to ON and coloured grey when set to OFF.

    Warning: Do not press Pump to energise the device if there is no liquid in the vessel. This will result in the pump running dry which can damage the pump.

    For greater repeatability of your mash schedule, you can control the pump output by adjusting the duty cycle of the pump rather than using the ball valve on the recirculation arm to adjust the output of the recirculating wort.

    To adjust the duty cycle of the pump, press the Select button until the Pump Percentage is highlighted then use the Up or Down buttons to change the pump percentage. If the pump percentage is reduced then the pump will cycle on/off to reduce the output.

    Alternatively, you can hold the pump button while pressing the up or down arrows to adjust the duty cycle.

    Important: to minimise the risk of blocking the pump, always have the top screen in place when recirculating wort during the mash

    Press the Select button until the Heat Percentage is highlighted then use the Up or Down buttons to change the heating power.

    If you have PID disabled then it is best to set the heating power to between 30-40% during the mash to stop the temperature overshooting your set temperature.

    Note: If Distillation Mode is enabled then the Heating power percentages will be locked to only power output using the elements -relay switching of elements is disabled in this mode.

    NOTE: In most cases calibration is not required. Only calibrate if temperature reading is inaccurate.

    If you find that your temperature probe is not reading the correct temperature for example if is reading over or under 100°C when boiling at sea level then a 2-point calibration can be performed.

    To calibrate the built in probe

    1. Enter the menu by pressing Select

    2. Use the Up or Down arrows to navigate to Settings and press Select

    3. Navigate to Calibration Point 1 and hit Select

    Calibration Point 1

    FIll your boiler with at least 5L ice water and measure the temperature of the water using a calibration thermometer such as a KL23320 Digital Instant Read Thermometer. Wait for the temperature reading on both the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla and the external calibrated thermometer to stabilise as much as possible.

    Then adjust the temperature shown on the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla (Calibration Point 1) to match the temperature measured on the external calibrated thermometer.

    Press Select to lock in Calibration point 1 and move on to Calibration point 2.

    Empty the boiler and fill with hot or boiling water. Alternatively bring the water already in the boiler to boiling point by setting the temperature to above 100C and the power to 100%. When the water in the boiler is visibly boiling measure the temperature of the water using a calibration thermometer such as a KL23320 Digital Instant Read Thermometer. At sea level this will be 100°C.

    Then adjust the temperature shown on the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla to match the temperature measured on the external calibrated thermometer.

    Press Select to lock in this calibration point 2

    Your RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla is now calibrated.

    Pro Tip: Instead of using ice water and boiling water to calibrate (which will give the greatest accuracy across the widest temeprature range) you can calibrate Point 1 at 65°C (Using a calibrated thermoemter and bringing the water to this temperature using the elements) and Calibrate Point 2 at boiling point (100C). This can give better accuracy in the mashing temperature range.

    You can manually reset the temperature probe to the default settings.

    1. NTC beta: 3950

    2. NTC ref. temperature: 298.2

    3. NTC ref. resistance: 100000

    You can also select Forget Calibration in Settings. This will revert any saved calibration settings to default.

    The Gen 4 BrewZilla includes a setting to enable PID Heating. The default settings for the PID coefficients are shown in the Default Settings table. These coefficients should be considered a baseline and will need to be adjusted in most cases to acheive a reasonable result during brewing.

    Note that due to the nature of PID temperature control, for ideal results you will need to manually adjust the PID setings for every batch, to compensate for variables such as water volume, desired temeprature range, grain quantity etc.

    For example, when brewing larger or smaller batches, or creating wort of higher o lower gravities the PID settings will typically need to be adjusted in order to acheive the desired result.

    PID can allow for precise temperature control. However, real world limitations as outlined bove mean that it is typically easier to acheive highly accurate, responsive and stable temperature control using a Bonded RAPT Bluetooth Probe. Refer to the Bluetooth Operation section for a detailed guide.

    Once you have assembled your boiler, digital controller and malt pipe you are then ready to add grains to begin mashing.

    Ensure that you have added the correct volume of strike water and this water is heated up to the correct strike temperature according to your recipe. Generally, the strike temperature is a few degrees Celsius above your desired mash temperature.

    Then add your malt pipe with the bottom perforated screen installed into your boiler, such that the top lip of the malt pipe rests on the wire supports which are nested in the groove at the top of the boiler.

    You can then pour your grain into the malt pipe.

    It is best to stir the grain periodically while pouring it into your malt pipe to break up any dough balls (dry spots). Once you have added all the grain thoroughly stir the grain to ensure all the dough balls have been broken up. This will take about 2-5 minutes.

    Then insert the top screen into the malt pipe so that it lightly rests on top of the grain. After all the grain has been stirred in and the top screen inserted, you can then

    to recirculate the wort during the mash.

    You may find that the temperature may overshoot the target temperature if the heating power is set to 100%. To maintain a more stable mash temperature, reduce the heating power to between 30-40%. However, the exact power setting is dependent on a number of variables such as your grain bill, whether your unit is jacketed and heat loss from the system for example so the exact required power can vary.

    The temperature on the digital controller reads the temperature at the bottom of the boiler near where the elements are mounted. It is important to understand that this is not the core temperature of the mash. If you recirculate long enough the mash temperature will eventually be close the measured temperature displayed on the digital controller.

    With that said if you want to increase the temperature of the mash it is normally fastest and easiest to overshoot the desired mash temperature by a few degrees while using a secondary calibrated thermometer in the mash to keep an eye on the core temperature of the mash.

    If you are finding that you are overshooting your target temperature during the mash for example, then adjust your heating power.

    The probe placement has been designed to prevent the element from overheating and scorching the wort by taking the temperature of the wort closest to the elements. This is why your strike temperature needs to be accurate!

    Adding a Heat Exchange Dish (HED) to the False Bottom of the BrewZilla can help get better flow over the base of the boiler and thus the temperature probe. This can increase accuracy of temeprature readings during brewing.

    The BrewZilla includes Ultra Low Watt Density Elements (ULWD) meaning brighter beer can be brewed with the fear of scorching and burnt off flavours.

    For the best possible accuracy and control of the mash process and temperature, the use of a RAPT Bluetooth Probe is recommended. This allows the temperature to be measured directly from the mash. This decouples temperature control from the elements so you cn quite easily acheive more precise and faster temeprature adjustments.

    For a detailed guide to using the RAPT Bluetooth Probe with the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZIlla refer to the Bluetooth Operation section.

    Pro Tip: If using the RAPT Bluetooth Probe for the mash then set the Sensor DIfferntential to a low value to minimise temperature swings (~2°C). You can increase the Sensor Differential if doing a step mash or a mash out (8-10°C)

    Once you have mashed your grain for 30-90 minutes (typically mash time is 60 minutes) it’s then time to sparge the grain. Sparging involves rinsing the grain bed with warm water to extract as much sugar as possible without extracting undesirable tannins.

    Using the malt pipe handle lift the malt pipe out of the boiler and rotate 90 degrees until you see the feet of the malt pipe located near the halo ring (wire supports). See picture below.

    Note: Perforated Malt Pipe not available in all regions

    The Gen 4 BrewZilla includes a two-stage malt pipe. This gives you the option to lift the malt pipe half way up and support it on the halo ring. This makes it more ergonomic, making it easier to lift the heavy malt pipe out of the liquid. If you are making smaller batches only raising the malt pipe up halfway may be preferable.

    It is advised to have the top screen inserted into the malt pipe during sparge to prevent channelling through the grain bed which can reduce your efficiency.

    Once the malt pipe is suspended above the boiler and is securely supported by the halo ring then pour warm water (approximately 75-80°C) onto the top screen inside the malt pipe to rinse the grain of the majority of the remaining sugars. Using brewing software such as BrewFather or the RAPT Brewing software is the best way to calculate required water quantities.

    A secondary vessel or HLT (Hot Liquor Tank) is receommended for this process. A 35L Digiboil is ideal for this.

    Pro Tip: You can turn the heat to boiling temperature and change the heat power to 100% as soon as the malt pipe has been lifted. This will bring the wort to a boil faster.

    Boiling is one of the final steps of making beer in the BrewZilla. Simply set the heating power to 100% and set the target temperature to over 100°C which will result in the elements remaining on continuously. If you set the controller to 100°C you may find that the elements turn off for a brief period once this temperature is hit. Ideally you want the elements to run at full power during the entirety of the boil.

    Once you have reached a boil make your hop additions and boil as long as required as per your recipe. A normal boil length is 60 minutes however this can vary between beer styles.

    Pro Tip: If you are running a Profile for the brew, you can set alerts when creating the profile as a reminder of when to add hops (for example).

    At sea level water will boil at 100°C. If a temperature of above 100°C is displayed on the controller while the wort is boiling then you will need to calibrate your temperature probe

    If a temperature below 100°C is displayed on the controller while the wort is boiling and you are at sea level then you will need to calibrate your temperature probe.

    Water boils at a temperature less than 100°C at altitudes above sea level. So, if your wort is boiling below 100°C and you are at a high altitude then correlate the displayed temperature with the boiling point of water at your elevation to determine if calibration is required.

    The BrewZilla includes an immersion cooling coil*. An optional counter flow can be purchased separately but these are complicated to use and it is sold as an optional extra.

    *35L and 65L models only. Immersion chilling is not receommended for the 100L BrewZilla - a counterflow chiller is much better suited.

    The immersion chiller is easy to use and clean, simply connect your garden hose to each end and run cold water through the chiller while it’s immersed in the wort inside the boiler. Place the immersion chiler into the boiling wort at least 10 minutes before the boil ends in order to ensure it is sanitised.

    If you were looking to save water you can also connect the immersion chiller to your pump on your BrewZilla and then immerse your immersion chiller in a bucket of ice water.

    There are a number of optional fittings which can be used to easily connect your garden hose or pump to your immersion chiller which can be purchased separately.

    The easiest way to connect a garden hose to the immersion chiller is to simply push the garden hose over the immersion chiller and secure with a hose clamp.

    For a more ergonomic solution you can install compression fittings and garden hose fittings onto your immersion chiller. This will allow you to quickly connect and disconnect a garden hose using female garden hose quick disconnect fittings.

    12.7mm compression fittings KL02004 and male garden hose fittings KL09461 can be purchased separately. Two of each fitting will be required to have a male garden hose fitting on each end of the immersion chiller.

    Using compression fittings to add garden hose connectors

    If you were looking to save water you can easily hook your immersion chiller up to the pump on your BrewZilla using 12.7mm compression fittings KL02004 and camlock fittings (KL04503 and KL04497). Run some silicone hosing KL06873 from your recirculation arm to your chiller and then run silicone hosing from the outlet of the chiller back into the BrewZilla.

    The compression fittings, camlock fittings and extra silicone hosing can be purchased separately.

    Adding camlock fittings to the immersion chiller

    If you prefer to use this method recirculate boiling wort through the chiller and back into the boiler for at least 5 minutes to make sure the coil is hot and any potential contaminant such as wild yeast or bacteria are killed by the boiling wort.

    Once you have sanitised your chiller, place the chiller into a bucket of ice water and use the ball valve on the recirculation arm to adjust the flow rate. Adjusting the flow rate on the recirculation arm will change the temperature out of the output of the coil. So, use this adjustment to achieve your desired wort temperature so the wort is at a suitable temperature to put into your fermenter.

    Another great method of cooling your wort that saves time is hot cubing. If you fill a HDPE Cube or HDPE Bladder with hot wort then quickly fit the lid, this will keep your wort in a sanitary environment, as the boiling or near boiling temeprature wort is hot enough to instantly sanitise.

    If you use this method, make sure to purge air out of the cube / bladder and then simply leave it at ambient temperature for 24 hours to cool down (preferably out of direct sunlight). Once cool, transfer to your fermenter and pitch yeast as normal.

    Hot cubing - a great alternative to cooling wort

    The Gen 4 BrewZilla has a domed bottom with a centralised pump inlet. This makes it easy to drain all liquid from the brewery at the end of your brew day simply by opening the tap. After the liquid has been drain then rinse to remove any trub from the boiler. You may find tipping the unit upside down will do a better job at getting all this trub out of the boiler.

    Then fill your brewery up with water and an approved cleaner such as StellarClean according to the instructions on the package. Set the temperature on the boiler to 55°C and attach the camlock recirculation arm. Then select Pump on the device to energise it and recirculate this cleaner for 10 minutes using the pump, particulates on the wall of the brewery can be removed using a sponge or cloth. Then turn the pump off and connect your chiller (if required) and recirculate through the chiller for another 5 minutes.

    Then use the Pause button to turn the elements and pump off, empty the cleaning liquid and rinse the brewery using a hose or fill with clean water. Attach the recirculation arm and press play to reenergise the device and run the pump to rinse the recirculation arm and repat with your chiller (if required).

    After it has been rinsed, empty this water and then fill again with water and an approved sanitiser such as StellarSan according to the package instructions. Acidic sanitisers such as StellarSan assists with dissolving minerals which produce beer stone and also helps to passivate the stainless steel. Recirculate this StellarSan solution through the camlock recirculation arm and the chiller (if required). The StellarSan solution can then be emptied ready for the next brew day, it does not require rinsing.

    Generally, the pump does not require disassembly after each brew day, simply recirculating cleaner and sanitiser through it will break down and dissolve any proteins, minerals or contaminants present in the pump.

    The pump on the Gen 4 BrewZilla is easily accessible by simply flipping the brewery over if you decide you wanted to perform a thorough clean or your pump happens to become stuck.

    If you have a blocked pump you may need to disassemble the pump. To Disassemble the pump, detach all hosing first and then unscrew the pump from the brewery. Then remove the screws that hold the pump head on and check the pump head for debris and or solids that could be stuck in the pump head. Remove the impeller and check if for damage or any blockage that could be stopping it from spinning. Look in the impeller housing and confirm no blockages are within this housing.

    Pro Tip: Recirculating hot StellarClean PBW as described in Cleaning for at least 10 minutes will help keep the impeller and pump head from becoming sticky or clogged.

    NOTE: Never direct a garden hose down the pump inlet or recirculation arm as this can result in the silicone hosing rupturing due to the high pressure of mains water.

    If updating the firmware persistently fails or throws an error, and all troubleshooting steps have failed, then try using your mobile phone as a Hotspot to resolve this.

    Using the phone as a Hotspot will typically solve firmware update issues of this kind

    1: It helps eliminate potential network or modem/router issues which can cause problems that can be hard to isolate and resolve

    2: It can help eliminate signal strength or poor WiFi connection issues as the phone can be positioned right next to the RAPT device when in Hotspot mode.

    To connect to the phone Hotspot and update the firmware there are a few steps to follow

    1. On the phone, turn WiFi OFF. When troubleshooting firmware download or network issues, we do not want to use the same network thus the phone must be disconnected from the WiFi network in order to do this

    2. Enable Personal Hotspot (sometimes just called Hotspot) on your phone. This is typically located under the WiFi or Network menu in the Settings menu of the phone. On IOS this is under Settings/Personal Hotspot. The menu names will vary on Android depending on device

    3. Enable Maximise Compatibility (on IOS) or 2.4gHz Network Only

    Menus | RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla

    The RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla is designed to be largely controlled through the RAPT Portal.

    There are various on board functions which can be accessed directly through the on board menu.

    To use the on board menu, use the Up or Down buttons to navigate. Use the Select button to select or enter a function once highlighted. Use the Return button to escape from a Menu option or return to the prvious screen. Selecting Back will not save any changes.

    Register Device

    This option will only be available when the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla is not registered to the RAPT Portal. For a step by step guide to registering your RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla please refer to Getting Started

    Profiles

    To access currently running Profiles, or Profiles that have been uploaded to the device, navigate to and select Profiles in the menu. From this menu, available Profiles can be started, stopped and paused.

    Active profiles can also be skipped to another step or reverted to a previous step. Please refer to for a full guide.

    Delayed Start is a smart timer that allows (for example) the strike water to be heated to a set temperature at a set time. This is useful if you wish to brew early in the morning - you can fill the BrewZilla and select the time you want the mash water to be ready.

    To input a Delayed Start temperature and time, first enter the desired temperature using the Up or Down buttons. When the desired temperature is displayed, press Select to move to the next field.

    The next field is the time in hours and minutes the temperature should be reached. Enter the desired time using the Up or Down buttons.

    NOTE: If the BrewZIlla is connected to WiFi and Registered to your RAPT Account, a dynamic display will show the time and date at which the input temperature will be reached.

    Once the desired time has been reached, press Select to move to the next field. The next field allows you to include or not include heating time. If Yes is selected, heating time will be included. This means the BrewZilla will start heating before the selected time such that the target temperature is reached at the selected time. If No is selected, the BrewZilla will start heating at the selected time.

    Once all setting s are correct, press Select to save the Delayed Start. The BrewZilla will now automatically begin heating at the selected time.

    NOTE: The BrewZilla will be automatically set to heat at 100% power when Delayed Start is active. Heating time calculations are based on 100% power. The power setting can be manually changed once the Delayed Start has been set. However, this will not be allowed for in timing calculations and is therefore not recommended to be changed.

    Delayed Start can be cancelled at any time. Open the menu and select Cancel Delayed Start to cancel.

    This is performed through the Profiles screen

    The following options are available in the Settings Menu.

    To change any of the advanced settings enter the Menu by pressing Select . Once in the menu navigate to Settings and press Select

    Up or Down buttons to adjust the set value for the setting. To save your setting hit Select . To return to the menu without saving choose Cycle/Back

    Some options are on/off toggles that can be activated or deactivated from the Settings Menu directly.

    SETTING
    PARAMETER

    Bluetooth needs to first be enabled in the menu (above).

    To Bond a Bluetooth enabled RAPT device, use the Up or Down buttons to scroll to select the device. Choose Select button to Bond the device, or the Cycle/Back button to cancel.

    Once Bonded, the device will be visible in the Bonded section of the Bluetooth Menu. To Unbond, select the device with the navigation arrows and choose Select buttont to Unbond the device, or the Cycle/Back button to cancel.

    Once the device is Bonded, it can be selected in the Settings menu option as one of the available Temperature Sensors. Once selected in this menu, temperature control will be ceded to the selected Bluetooth enabled RAPT device, rather than the internal temperature probe. In addition, on the TFT display the current (most recent) Gravity and Temperature reading will be displayed. The internal (built in probe) temperature is also displayed.

    NOTE: this is not displayed in Graph Enabled Mode.

    NOTE: It is completely normal for there to be a temperature variance between the built in probe and the Bluetooth enabled RAPT device. This is because the Bluetooth device is measuring the temperature of the mash (typically), and the built in probe is measuring the temperature at the base of the boiler. This difference will be greater when the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla is actively heating.

    The Allowed Sensor Diff. Iin the menu) sets the allowed temperature differential between the desired setpoint and the current temperature of the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla's built in probe. Heating is disabled temporarily if this differential is exceeded. The default differential setting is 2°C. This value is suitable for mashing. For step mashing or mash out (for example) you may wish to increase this differential as this allows the temperature of the mash to be incresed at a faster rate.

    This differential can be altered in the Settings menu. If the temperature differential is exceeded, the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZillawill suspend heating until the differential is reduced. The legend DIFF OVERRIDE will also be displayed when the display is in Graph Disabled Mode.

    The RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla will suspend active heating and resume as needed – no intervention is required. Once the differential is reduced then heating will continue as normal.

    The Diagnostics menu contains information about the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla. This includes such information as current firmware version, Wi-Fi network and signal strength, MAC address and IP address of the device.

    The About menu contains information specific to the firmware and software of the RAPT Gen 4 BrewZilla and associated devices, including but not limited to copyright information, acknowledgment of open source properties used, legal information etc.

    (on Android - again, this will have different names depending on device/OS). This will help minimise issues when connecting
  • Once Hotspot is enabled on the device, following the steps in Getting Started to connect to the phone Hotspot

  • Once connected, navigate to Settings/Check for OTA update on the RAPT Device

  • Check for blockages. To determine if the pump is faulty or blocked remove the pump head when the BrewZIlla is empty and cool enough to handle. Inspect inside the pump head for grain or hop matter and clean as required. If not blocked, check to see if the impeller is spinning freely - sticky work buildup may prevent this

    BrewZilla making a clicking noise in operation

    This is normal. The elements are controlled by robust relay switching and thus clicking will be heard when the power is set to less than 100%

    Mash temperature is different to probe temperature

    This is normal. Due to grain having a large thermal mass the grain bed will not respond to temperature changes as quickly as the free flowing wort near the elements. Use of a allows for precise and accurate control

    Temperature reading error

    Calibration issue. Select the Forget Calibration option from Settings to restore default calibration settings. If this clears the error re-calibrate following . Ensure that the two calibration points are at least 20°C apart to minimise errors

    Temperature reading not correct

    Enter password 'kegland1'

    Cannot see KegLand RAPT XXX in my list of available networks

    Navigate to Settings and Enable WiFI

    Unplug the device for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and refresh the list of networks on your mobile device

    This may already be connected to WiFi. Check the IP (STA) in Diagnostics. If this is populated with an IP address that is not 0.0.0.0 then this is already connected

    "Selected Network is not connected to the Internet" error

    Select the KegLand RAPT XXX network and choose "Forget This Network"

    Device does not connect to my WiFi network

    Check that your network is broadcasting a 2.4gHz signal

    Non alphanumeric characters in the SSID or password can cause issues - change these to simple (letters and numbers only) characters

    Ensure you are selecting the correct network and inputting the correct password for that network

    The network must have a password – the device cannot connect to an unsecured network

    The device may already be connected. Check the IP (STA) in Diagnostics. If this is populated with an IP address that is not 0.0.0.0 then the deviceis likely already connected

    Reboot the device by unplugging for at least 309 seconds

    Reboot your modem/WiFi router

    Try connecting to a different WiFi network

    Turn off any VPN or anything that can block an outgoing signal on the router

    If the above do not work, see Using Phone as Hotspot below

    Cannot see a Validation Code

    Connect the device to your WiFi network

    Update the firmware - select Check for OTA update in Settings

    Error when Registering device

    Check that the device firmware is up to date - select Check for OTA update in the DIagnostics screen

    The Validation Code may have timed out. Reboot the device by unplugging it for at least 30 seconds, then plugging it back in. Log out of the RAPT Portal and log back in

    If the above steps do not work, reboot the network that the device is connected to. Once the network has rebooted, reboot the device by unplugging it for at least 30 seconds, then plugging it back in. Log out of the RAPT Portal and log back in. Note: if using a modem and seperate wifi roters, reboot the modem and then the wifi routers in that order.

    A corrupt firmware install can prevent registration. This can happen if a firmware download is interrputed, for example. If the above steps do not allow registration, please refer to RAPT Device Boot Loop Troubleshooting & Recovery Mode to rollback firmware to a good version, then update to the current version

    Determine whether your device is connected to Wi-Fi

    To check this navigate to Diagnostics and check that it shows your network’s IP address next to IP (STA) - in the form 192.168.XX.XXX or similar. You can also check the WiFi AP (Access Point ) the device is connected to and the current WiFi signal strength

    Determine whether your device is registered to the RAPT Portal

    If the message "Register your device by pressing the select button to enter the main menu, then selecting the "Register Device" item in the main menu" is displayed, this is not registered. Please follow the steps outlined in Register Device

    Cannot update firmware | 5379 Error

    This is a network issue. The OTA Firmware Update could not be validated or was incomplete. Ensure your device is as close as possible to the router. Check signal strength in Diagnostics

    Ensure you have a strong 2.4gHz WiFi signal (not just 5gHZ). Check your signal strength against this table

    Make sure there are no VPNs in use, or filters or other potential issues set up in the router that can block an outgoing signal

    If issues persist, reboot the device and also the modem

    If the above do not work, see Using Phone as Hotspot below

    Cannot update firmware | 28674 Error

    This is a network issue. The OTA Firmware Update could not be validated or was incomplete. Ensure your device is as close as possible to the router. Check signal strength in Diagnostics

    Error 28674 is an error opening an HTTP connection. Check your modem or router settings. A VPN, Firewall or other setting may be blocking outgoing connections - this is a common reason for this error

    Ensure you have a strong 2.4gHz WiFi signal (not just 5gHZ). Check your signal strength against this table

    If issues persist, reboot the device and also the modem

    If the above do not work, see Using Phone as Hotspot below

    Pump not working

    Pump is blocked. The most common reason for a BrewZilla pump to stop working is due to blockage. The pump is easily accessible so the head can be removed and cleaned/unblocked. To prevent pump blockages always use the top screen when mashing or elevate the recirc tubing above the grain bed. Using the ball valve to control recirc speed can also help. If the recirc tubing contacts the grain bed it is common to have grain 'sucked back' into the pump causing blockages. Refer to Pump Cleaning and Maintenance for more information

    Cavitation. Cavitation during the boil can cause an airlock in the pump. Cycle the pump on and off briefly to clear this.

    Not cleaned properly. If the pump is not thoroughly cleaned after every use then sticky wort build up can cause the pump to fail or stop working. Ensure that hot (~50°C) StellarClean PBW solution is recirculated for at least 10 minutes after every brew day to prevent sticky wort buildup.
